"I'm too young for this? I can't being going through menopause...NOW!" The stage before menopause, perimenopause , can last up to 10 years, yes TEN YEARS before a women actually hits menopause.

A natural decrease in hormone production causes the three phases of menopause (perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause). As hormone levels begin to decline, a variety of symptoms may present themselves. During the perimenopause stage, estrogen levels start to rise and fall at different rates, which may cause one of the following symptoms:

8 Symptoms of Perimenopause

1. Irregular Periods Many patients report that the duration and regularity of periods may begin to change. As perimenopause progresses, periods may become further and further apart.

2. Decreased Bone Density With declining estrogen levels, many women may begin to lose bone density.

I spent many years in the trenches battling disease, fighting death, and trying to help patients return to health. Sometimes I was there when they took their last breath. Sometimes, I was there to say, "No, not today" when a patient asked, "Am I going to die?"

Every one of my patients had something in common. I was loosing the battle. I was not returning them to a healthy state. I was managing their illness until the next dose increase. Before I left the ED (Emergency Department), I vowed I never wanted to end up as "one of those patients" aka "the train wrecks." These were the patients that were morbidly obese, had multiple diseases, on numerous medications that took not one set but maybe two or three sets of hands to count. These were the patients that were in and out of the hospital. When I went into primary care, this meant they were in and out of my office. And in today's world of low insurance reimbursements, this meant I had very little time to address the true needs of the patient. This really translates to:

1. No time to teach and educate a patient

2. No time to dedicate to patients to really teach them lifestyle modification

3. Limited follow up to monitor and patient's progress

4. I was constrained in how I wanted to practice

5. Was I really preventing disease?

6. Was I really making an impact and difference?

7. Was I really getting to the root cause of disease?

Nurses like to teach. We like to be a part of our patient's lives. It's how we are developed as baby nurses. It's what sets us apart in the medical profession. Nurses are different. NURSES MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO LIVES. We are not doctors, don't pretend to be doctors, and we know our scope of practice. Some of us have gone on to pursue advanced degrees and specialized our crafts to touch and change lives for the better. This is why Functional & Integrative Medicine.
